Cow Cookies (aka Granny’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie)

Servings: 36 Total Time: 40 mins Difficulty: Beginner

Everyone needs a go-to family cookie recipe. Ours is my Granny’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, which we continue to pass down through each new generation. This recipe comes straight from my Granny, a woman who could do it all. She crocheted the softest, coziest blankets, hiked mountains in western North Carolina weekly, kept up with her younger fitness class gals, tended a lush garden, and made time for her grandchildren every year on her “granny rounds.” Even in her final days, when someone asked how she was doing, she would smile and say, “Oh darlin’, I’m just ducky.” Yes, I know. She was the cutest.

You’re probably wondering why these Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies go by the name Cow Cookies. You can thank my dad for that one. He always had a trick up his sleeve, ready to capitalize on the gullibility of his four kids. (It took me far too long to realize that no, he didn’t really walk on the moon. And no, he didn’t go to high school with Coolio, either.)

Flashback to Christmas 2002: my younger brother sits at the counter while my dad whips up a big batch of cookies under Granny’s watchful eye. It’s past his bedtime, and to avoid a sugar high, Dad convinces him that the chocolate chips come from real cows. Naturally, my brother hesitates. He had no reason to doubt anything my dad said (see above). Granny plays along, of course, and that little prank turns into one of those silly family stories that still make us laugh decades later. Such a sweet memory that is forever tied to Granny’s “Cow Cookies.”

Go grab your little ones and start a new, delicious family tradition.

Instructions

Step 1

  1. Prep

Preheat oven to 350°F and gather all ingredients.

Step 2

  1. Cream butter and sugar

Cream together both sugars and butter until fluffy and combined.

Step 3

  1. Add eggs

Add eggs, 1 at a time, to the sugar/butter mixture until combined. Scrape sides if needed.

Step 4

  1. Add salt, baking soda, and vanilla

Add salt, baking soda, and vanilla to the mixture and mix until combined.

Step 5

  1. Mix by hand

Add flour and oats to the mixture and stir by hand with a large silicone spatula (or spoon of choice) until combined. Once finished, add chocolate chips.

Granny's recipe calls for 12oz of chocolate chips, but measure with your heart!

Step 6

  1. Scoop

Scoop about 1.5 tbsp of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. To fully achieve an authentic Cow Cookie, use two small dinner spoons (one to scoop, and one to scrape) to place dough onto the baking sheet. Keep the dough rustic looking to give each cookie its own little personality. Traditionally, Cow Cookies can be eaten in one bite.

Step 7

  1. Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
